THE 2009 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP : conditions could not have been better over the 2 days for what turned out to be an excellent event. The course was presented in superb condition so are thanks firstly go to the greenkeeping staff for all of their efforts in achieving this in the week running up to the CC, but also to those members who gave up their own time to assist on both days making the championship a success. Blue skies and little wind on Saturday presented ideal conditions for good scoring so the target for the scratch contenders was to shot scores in the seventies to give themselves a reasonable chance of the ultimate prize. Chris Dunn 79, Simon Rice & John Wilcocks 78, Andy Dent & Dave Lord 76, Mike Nelson & Chris Gosney 72 were all in the hunt but Matt Wheeler with a gross 68 had put himself 4 shots clear.
The nett event also produced some excellent scores on the first day, Alistair Courtney 69(19), Dot Evans 67(22), Alan Marchant 64(27) & Dave Lord 62(14) were all major contenders but the outstanding score on Saturday was Bill Giles with a nett 53 off a handicap of 18 giving him a considerable lead.
Whilst Sunday again produced blue skies and sunshine there was also a stiff breeze for the participants to contend with which inevitably was going to make scoring more difficult. This proved to be the case in the scratch competition with none of the contenders producing better scores than on the first day so it was going to revolve around players who could best hold their nerve a contend with the blustry conditions. The early holes took their toll with some of the leaders making double bogies and worse in a couple of instances but Matt Wheeler seemed to be coping better than others and as the second round progressed he steadily started to open up a significant gap in the scores and finally reclaimed the club championship with a second round of 74 giving him a margin of 14 shots over Chris Gosney the previous champion..
Final scratch scores:- Matt Wheeler 68 – 74 – 142 Chris Gosney 72 – 84 – 156 Andy Dent 76 – 81 – 157 Mike Nelson 72 – 85 – 157 John Wilcocks 78 – 80 – 158 Dave Lord 76 – 83 – 159 Chris Dunn 79 – 83 – 162 Simon Rice 78 – 89 – 167.
Whilst in the scratch competition the positions showed little change from the first day, the nett event proved to be different with players improving on their first dat returns and the positions changing considerably. Bill Giles was not able to sustain his outstanding performance from day one but two players Dot Evans & Alan Marchant did produce better returns resulting in them both having a combined net score of 127. Unfortunately one of them has to loose on countback & on this occasion it was Alan Marchant giving Dot Evans the best net result.
Final Net Scores:- Dot Evans 67 – 60 – 127 (22) Alan Marchant 64 – 63 – 127 (27) Bill Giles 53 – 76 – 129 (23) Dave Lord 62 – 69 – 131 (14) Alistair Courtney 69 – 64 – (19) Mike Nelson 60 – 73 – 133 (12).
Some significant handicap cuts result from these returns.
Our thanks to all members who participated and our congratulations to those who where sucessful.
