August News Letter
August 2012 Club Newsletter
Following the change of Management of the Golf Course the Staff and Committee have been very busy behind the scenes. We are pleased with membership renewal this year and also with the number of new members. People who have not played here for a while are very impressed with the course and we are getting a lot of good feedback on the course. We would however like to welcome all existing and new Members and hope that in time we will get to see you at some of the events that are planned. We have produced a provisional Fixture List to take us to the end of this year and this is on the Noticeboard and the website. During the course of the coming months we will be working on the 2013 Fixture List where it is intended that we return to a more structured format whereby the Competitions will relate to Honours Boards. We will be updating the Honours Boards. In the meantime please keep an eye on the Noticeboard and the website this is our main form of communication with Members. We do also text and email – if any Member does not wish to be communicated with or similarly if you have given us your email address and you are not receiving mail please let Fred Gordon know to confirm these requirements on our new database! Alternatively send us an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it we can update our records.
SUGGESTIONS BOX
We have been very pleased with the effort Members have gone to in responding to this. Following the recent Committee Meeting we have put a selection of suggestions and responses on the Noticeboard.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP –
Following our decision to postpone the Club Championship in July because of inclement weather last weekend proved to be kind to us for our big event. Congratulations to all Members who played well and commiserations to those who did not. Start practicing for next year!
The conditions on Saturday lent themselves to some potentially good scoring and overall there were some good gross scores returned. The Saturday leader board was very close with only 6 shots separating the first seven players – Dave Lord 73 – Rob Churcher & John Wilcox 76 – Dave Bradbury 77 – Les Maros & Bill Giles 78 – Tony Czapp 79. The Net competition was even closer with only 5 shots separating the top 10 players – Bill Giles 61 – Nigel Shelley/Tony Czapp/Dave Lord/Glyn Harris 63 – Les Maros 64 – Dave Summerton/David Laycock/Rob Churcher 65 – Dave Bradbury 66. Sunday was excellent day weather wise although there was a slight breeze which if nothing else did make things slightly more comfortable for all competitors. The top six gross scores went out as the final 2 groups, after 9 holes the gap between Rob Churcher & Dave Lord remained at 3 shots with John Wilcox dropping slightly behind these two, nobody from any of the other final groupings appeared to be making any inroads on these guys so it looked as though the club champion was going to come from these two. At one stage Rob got to within 1 shot of Dave but the gap was to be reasserted with Dave Lord playing a very solid round of 77 to give us a new Club Champion for 2012 with a score of 150, Rob Churcher being runner up for the second year in succession with a score of 153. John Wilcox, last year’s Club Champion achieved a credible 3rd spot (157) with Mark Hammett, who had the lowest gross score of 76 on Sunday, slipped into 4th place (160) followed by Les Maros (5th 161), Bill Giles (6th 162) & Dave Bradbury (7th 163). The net competition was won by Bill Giles who followed up his Saturday score of 61 with a 67 on Sunday to give an overall net score of 128, 2nd was David Laycock – 130 – 3rd Dave Lord 130 – 4th Rob Churcher – 13 5th Les Maros 133 & 6th Mark Hammett 134.
We hope all members enjoyed the weekend, our congratulations to our new Club Champion Dave Lord shown here on the right.
THE COURSE : Following a very difficult start to both spring & summer when very excessive rainfall not only made the course very wet for the time of year but it also made cutting conditions very difficult for the green keepers. However with much effort and hard work the green keepers have produced a course in excellent playing condition with presentation for the Club Championship being first class. Most of you will have noticed some changes we have made to the course this summer with the cutting down of the longer rough under the trees being the most significant, which most members seem to approve of but I can’t think why !!
We have now started a programme of bunker work with a single member of staff now being responsible for improvements, the main focus at this stage being stone removal. Once we have achieved a significant improvement in this area we intend to rework/shape some bunkers and then hopefully next year sufficient funds will allow us to start a rejuvinating programme.
FUTURE COMPETITIONS: As a response to the request from many Members to have more Competitions please keep an eye on the Noticeboard and Fixture List. We are aiming to provide more Competitions and at different times so please support us.
SUMMER KNOCK OUT COMPETITIONS: Both the doubles & singles competitions are running relatively smoothly but there are some matches that have slipped past there due dates so can we ask that those matches that are outstanding be completed as soon as possible so that we can keep on track for completion dates. Well done to those of you that are still in the respective competitions. Commiserations to those who have been knocked out, better luck next year.
RESTAURANT: Members and their Friends. Julie and her team would like to offer a special discount to any Members or their Friends wanting a private function. Please ask for details.

Darren has now joined Foremost Golf buying group so we are now able to
purchase virtually any item of stock at competitive prices so if you are looking for something specific please ask the pro staff so we can offer you a competitive price. The Teaching Professional have also purchased Flight scope System, this is used to custom fit golf clubs on the driving range. Flight scope produces the following analysis:
- Swing speed
- How much spin you put on the golf ball
- How far your ball has travelled through the air
- How much roll is on the ball once it has landed
All of these factors help us to advise you on what golf club & shaft will best suit you and improve your golf to give a better handicap. Fitting is free so please call the shop to make an appointment.
On 26th September Taylormade will be here between 4-8pm with all of their fitting kit to demonstrate their range of equipment so please call the shop to make an appointment.
