February 2026 Newsletter
Please can we ask members to refrain from voicing frustrations at the counter staff. They are not responsible for the weather!
If you do have and concerns or problems, these should be emailed to the club to be reviewed and investigated by the relevant people.
Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated and will help to maintain an enjoyable environment for both members and staff.
Greenkeeping
Since the turn of the year, we have been fighting against the elements to keep as much of the golf course open as possible. We continue to work hard to ensure the course is protected for the later months, while also delivering a playable golf course for you at present.
At the start of the month, we experienced sub-zero temperatures which caused the ground to freeze. As a result of this the roots also ended up freezing. This was particularly damaging to the course as it made the grass blades brittle, which can leave long-lasting damage to the grass. To avoid damaging the golf course the decision was made to close during this period.
As the conditions warmed up, we also saw an increase in the rainfall. So far this year we have had 100 millimetres of rainfall. In comparison, for the second half of last year we recorded 350 millimetres of rain. This amount of rain has led to the course being closed in order to try to protect the ground as it became very soft.
We are now trialling a new chemical which we have been spraying on the greens. This should reduce the surface tension and dry the greens out. We have noticed a significant decrease in water on both the 7th and 8th greens following the treatment. This is a positive sign, and we hope to continue to notice improvements on the other greens.
It has been brought to our attention that people are not repairing their pitch marks. While we appreciate this may not be you creating these, it would be greatly appreciated that if you do spot any in the green that you fix at least some of those you see. This not only helps our greenkeepers but more importantly minimises the long-term damage pitch marks can cause.
Our greenkeepers have informed us that they are now finding multiple divots on greens across the golf course. If when playing you notice a divot on a green, please phone the shop immediately so we can identify the group responsible. Any player who is found to be doing this will be banned from playing at Chilworth for life.
Charity
As we have entered a new year, the charity we will be supporting in 2026 is Solent Dolphins chosen by our Ambassadors section. Solent Dolphins are a Hythe based charity run by volunteers, offering boat trips around the Solent for people with disabilities including wheelchair users. This charity has been running for 30 years and each year, over 3000 people are able to experience an activity that is not always accessible to them. All donations and contributions to this charity go towards the maintenance and upkeep of The Alison MacGregor boat. Over 80 trained skippers volunteer each year, to create memories for people that thought they would never experience being at sea.
In 2025 we raised £1,615.99 for Alzheimer’s Society. Through running several events, including our charity bunker and selling donated golf items. Thank you to everyone who donated, organised and got involved. We look forward to seeing how much we can raise this year.
